Fractured and Broken Teeth

Treatment for Fractured and Broken Teeth

We all thought that our teeth are quite strong and would always remain strong. However, the fact is that if not properly taken care of then they can actually break. Such a fracture or breaking of teeth can occur in numerous ways.

Chipping or fracturing of teeth happens because of the following reasons:
* When somebody hits you smack in the face.
* When you meet with an accident.
* When you bite down on something really hard and unbreakable (for example, lead bullets)
* Deterioration of the inner structure of the teeth.

Quite unlike breaking of bones in different parts of the human body, minor teeth fracture never results in acute pain. However, it does pain a lot if the nerve inside the tooth gets affected by the fracture. The pain either continues or recurs after short intervals till the time steps are taken to protect the nerve from saliva, hot or cold food and air.

Treatment for Fractured Teeth
For treating of fractured teeth patients need to pay a visit to their dentist. He/she is the best person to figure out the real cause behind the fracture and then advise you accordingly, that is after treating you. Adults can usually expect a Root Canal Treatment (RCT) while in case of kids dentists can save the nerve by timely treatment. However, real treatment varies from case to case.

* Broken Cusp: These need to be repaired if the damage done has affected your ability to chew. The cusp can be either filed back into shape or topped with a crown.
* Chips: Chips do not require serious treatment. Usually, the damage is repaired with filling material and then polished to make it look smooth.
* Cracked surface: Treatment depends on how deep is the crack. Surface cracks can be repaired by filling. However, if they have reached the nerve then RCT is required.
* Serious Breakage: The damage done to the tooth in this case is quite extensive. Treatment takes the form of a RCT followed by crowning of the affect tooth.

Things to Do before You Reach the Dentist's Clinic
* Whenever you become aware of a fractured tooth, you should set aside all work and rush to your dentist's clinic.
* Keep the broken pieces of your teeth safely. These can be cemented back in to position.
* If bleeding takes place then stop it using sterilized gauze.
* Apply an ice-pack from the outside to treat any swelling or pain in the nerve.
* If it is not possible for you to immediately see your dentist then cement the broken part of your teeth with dental cement. You can get it easily at any drugstore.
* If it is really hurting you then take a dose of pain reliever.
